Preparing Students for Leadership in the 21st Century
The U.S. has long been an economic leader and a strong voice for democracy in the world. But now, at the beginning of a new century, we face concerns over education, the environment, energy sustainability, political strife, and infectious diseases, to name a few. The leaders who successfully adapt to the new landscape will be distinguished by versatility and flexibility. They will initiate dialogue across cultural boundaries with ease, combine creativity with technical literacy, and find ways to harmonize local and global interests.
One of the most powerful ways to prepare students for a global future is to provide ample study-abroad opportunities and to expose them to international perspectives on campus. We’re the only university in the nation that ranks in the top ten in all three key areas of international studies:
- the number of foreign students enrolled
- the number of students studying abroad
- the number of federal research grants earned for international studies
We were the first to offer an advanced degree in global studies, and our Program in Arms Control Disarmament and International Security is the most comprehensive study program of its kind. At our Global Crossroads Center, we even provide housing that allows students from all over the world to live with others interested in international studies.
Universities play an indispensable role in developing leadership for the future. That’s why we’ve made Leadership in the 21st Century a priority for the Brilliant Futures Campaign.
